Lovers of long public readings need not wait till Bloomsday: Next Thursday, Kelly Writers House will be hosting a marathon reading of Vladimir Nabokov's darkly humorous novel, Lolita. Set in 1947, the book introduces us to middle-aged narrator Humbert Humbert and his growing attraction to 12-year-old Dolores Haze, whom he lovingly refers to as "Lolita." What follows is a twisted tale stuffed with inappropriate passion and biting cultural satire.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the book's U.S. publication, which the folks at KWH will be celebrating with a party, "because we at the Writers House have always been fans of literature's rebels," says organizer Erin Gautsche. "We knew that this momentous occasion would not pass without joyous incident."
You can either sign up to read 10-minute increments of the book (by e-mailing gautsche@writing.upenn.edu), or hang out and listen. Either way, it's free. But those daring enough to raise their voices and cry "Humbert Humbert!" score a complimentary CD with tunes from Lolita's era, including "When You Were Sweet 16" by Perry Como and "A Guy Is a Guy" by Doris Day, as well as food mentioned in the book.
The reading won't stop until the last page is read, which Gautsche estimates will be sometime around 11 p.m. Visitors can stay for as long or as little as they please; the atmosphere for the event will be informal. Just don't talk about Lolita's movie versions. "I think only about books," said Gautsche. "And programs."
