Vladimir Nabokov

Appeal from French Nabokov Society for Exhibit at Jan Michalski Foundation

By dana_dragunoiu, 27 October, 2022

Dear members,

We are proud to announce that the French Vladimir Nabokov Society is currently working on an important project meant to make Nabokov better known and more widely read, and therefore fulfilling one of our society’s primary missions. We (Agnès Edel-Roy and Marie, with the help of our Lausanne colleague Boris Vejdovsky) are indeed currently working on curating a major Nabokov exhibit to be held at the Jan Michalski Foundation for Writing and Literature in Montricher, Switzerland (near Montreux), from May to September 2023.

One of the evenings of the Nabokov Conference that we organize next June will take place at the Michalski Foundation, so that participants can see the exhibit and attend Brian Boyd’s keynote address in the Foundation’s beautiful auditorium.

Here is the link to the Michalski Foundation’s website: https://fondation-janmichalski.com/en

The exhibit will be a world’s first, as it will display many documents and objects gathered to make visitors discover the life, works, and multiple talents of our favorite writer. It will be the occasion to show manuscripts, photographs, letters, artistic and entomological drawings, personal documents, a few very rare first publications, and butterflies from the collection he donated to the Lausanne Zoology Museum. The project is possible thanks to the work of Natalia Graneiro and MĂ©lanie Kensicher from Michalski, and thanks to the support of the Vladimir Nabokov Literary Foundation, through a partnership with the New York Public Library. No previous Nabokov exhibit has gathered pieces from as many different archives and personal collections as the Nabokov Michalski exhibit.

We are however encountering some difficulty for certain parts of our Nabokov narrative, and are writing today to seek your help.

We are currently looking for high quality photos of two of Nabokov’s childhood haunts :

- photos of the Nabokovs’ Saint Petersburg home, at 47 Bolshaya Morskaya

- photos of the Rozhdestveno mansion and its surroundings, especially the Oredezh River. We are particularly looking for photographs taken in early Spring, when all the Marsh Marigolds blossom at the foot of the hill.

These photos will be displayed at the Michalski Foundation, and reproduced in the exhibition catalog. If you have such photos from your own travels to Nabokov’s Russian homes, please contact us. If you do not own such photos, we hope that this message will encourage you to attend the conference in June 2023, or come to Switzerland during the period of the Nabokov exhibit.

Please contact us at agnes.edelroy@vladimir-nabokov.org and marie.bouchet@vladimir-nabokov.org.

With our anticipated thanks for your help, and our best wishes,

Bien amicalement,

Agnès Edel-Roy et Marie Bouchet
