I tried to find any reference to the translation of "Vladimir" and "Victor" in "Pnin", but my rapid scanning procedure yielded no confirmation. Could F.Assa please give its page number or a quote?
In Pnin I found a humorous reference to a certain Vladimir Vladimirovich: 'Pity Vladimir Vladimirovich is not here,' remarked Chateau. 'He would have told us all about these enchanting insects.'/ 'I have always had the impression that his entomology was merely a pose.'
On the issue of names I came accross another one that was engendered by a partial fusion of two others ( like Kinbote's "Sutton"), this time in "Ada or Ardor".
Vivian Darkbloom's notes describe:
"Lowden: a portmanteau name combining two contemporary bards."
