According to VN (EO Commentary, vol. III, p. 145), Karamzin is also the author of one of the best Russian epigrams.*

In his Autobiographical Notes (<Из автобиографических записок>) Pushkin complains that one of the best Russian epigrams was attributed to him: Мне приписали одну из лучших русских эпиграмм; это не лучшая черта моей жизни. Actually, Pushkin is the author of the famous epigram on Karamzin (1818):

В его «Истории» изящность, простота
Доказывают нам, без всякого пристрастья,
Необходимость самовластья
И прелести кнута.

In his History [of Russian State] elegance, simplicity
Impartially prove to us
the necessity of despotism
and the delights of flogging.
