The original reads: "Mais je m’imaginais qu’il paraîtrait dans une édition
limitée, restreinte, réservée à quelques lettrés." I thought he had said the
contrary: "But I didn’t expect it to come out in a limited, restricted edition,
reserved for a few men of letters." What I meant in my commentary, Jansy, was
that if I mistranslated the sentence, it was probably because I thought Nabokov
was confident the book would appeal to a large public; did he expect the
American publishers to which he sent the manuscript before 1955 to publish "une
édition limitée, restreinte, réservés à quelque lettrés"?

Perhaps I shouldn't try too hard to justify my mistranlation. I am an arch
blunderer.
