While I wandered through my favorite book-stores in Brasília, focusing on books that were abandoned on a counter, I came upon a severe hard-cover edition, with a prim title: "Política."
I vaguely remembered a recent reference to its author at the Nab-List and, well... I decided to buy it, always bearing in mind the ever approaching presidential elections in Brazil...

The mention to Adam Thirlwell was made on May 24 (a review of Nabokov's  V&V)*. Somehow I imagined him as another Edmund Wilson, with a wise mane of white hair!
I'm now half-way through his marvellous book (what a relief to get away from Ian McEwan's sexual fantasies!). While I began to learn more about Thirlwell, thru google, I found an oldish, veryoff-hand Nab-sighting.** ( is this an indication of VN's Camera Obscura"?).
Googling for "Thirlwell Nabokov" there were hundreds more.***

** Boyd Tonkin (August 14,2010) "Yet the image of Thirlwell as a gilded gadfly never quite fitted the bill. Miss Herbert abounds with hosannahs for mischief-makers who bravely insisted on laughter in the dark. It speaks up for a pantheon of exiles and dissenters, profound jokers who shake the chains of a tyrannous history. The book's "immature" aesthetics resolve into an ethics "which teaches respect for the minor, the overlooked, the unsure". These underdogs laugh like hyenas.

The Escape will, again, fail to please the literary puritans, but the novel - and its protagonist - has a more visibly beating heart....www.independent.co.uk > ... > Books > Feature
