I believe beaver is also used (in Shakespeare, Hamlet) as another name
for the retractable visor which can be raised or lowered to protect
the face in helmets... Don't know if this has bearing on your
thoughts, but it could work also with the idea of duality, one face
when the visor/mask is down and the real face hidden behind.
