'Nishabd' gets lukewarm response

New Delhi, March 2 (IANS) The initial response to Ram Gopal Varma's "Nishabd", in which Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan romances a girl 40 years younger, has not been as overwhelming as expected, but trade pundits say it will pick up over the weekend.

"It is quite an impressive film. However, the occupancy rate today was 60 percent. But there are huge advance bookings for Saturday and Holi," Saurabh Varma, vice president Programming & Distribution of Inox Leisure Ltd, told IANS on phone from Mumbai.

Saurabh added that the reviews would help the film's fate at the box office.

The film, based on "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov, has newcomer Jiah Khan pitted opposite Amitabh.

Protests in Allahabad over Big B`s `Nishabd`
Allahabad (UP), Mar 03: Allahabad, actor Amitabh Bachchan's hometown, witnessed a mass protest on Friday against the screening of the Hindi movie "Nishabd", which focuses on the love of a 60-year-old man (Bachchan) and an 18-year-old girl (Jia Khan).

Protestors raised anti- Bachchan slogans and mangled posters of the movie.

"The release of Nishabd on the soil of Prayag can't be tolerated. Through this film, Amitabh Bachchan is propagating western culture in our youth, which is disgusting. We will not let the movie hit the halls. Indeed, Amitabh Bachchan should take a voluntarily retirement from film industry," said Mukund Tiwari, a local legislator.

"Nishabd" is said to be based on "Lolita", the 1955 best seller novel authored by Vladimir Nabokov. It is directed and produced by Ram Gopal Verma and reportedly, exhibits a high voltage sensual drama, much contrary to conventional Indian social norms. Both Verma and Bachchan have denied that the movie is a take off on "Lolita".

Old is gold
Nishabd

OLD man, young girl. Ram Gopal Varma’s Nishabd is more American Beauty than the Nabokov classic. His Jiah is no pre-pubescent Lolita, she is a full-bodied 18-year-old sexually charged machine waiting to be kick-started into action. The film is shot through with flashes of the old Ram Gopal Varma, in the days when he used to be able to make movies that held. The execution turns it fuzzy, Nishabd could have been a truly explosive love story, but its potential is frittered away.
