Usually when such horrible things happen caring parents even belatedly strive to discover the reason with all little details acquiring special significance. If we allow for possibility that Shades did not know what was on Hazel's mind that may vindicate them from being not caring. It will also explain that Shade was inspired by the sad revelations to write his poem. Since he did not know enough at the time he strives to know much more. His insights transcend the past bringing otherworldliness to PF.
