I agree that this trail (especially in the form of any explication of my own views, which are not at all reflected in what I remember of what I was taught as a child) is not one we need to follow on this list. But some discussion of the subject — it may have taken place long ago and been thoroughly settled — will have to be endured if we are to understand Charles The Beloved’s aka Charles Kinbote’s iterated and reiterated fundamentalist Christianity. The discussion could begin with the identification of the anguished priest young Charles observes while cooling his calves against a stone column.
