Dear Carolyn, Jansy, William and any other sharp-eyed sleuths who teased out that recollection of mine:
 
You found exactly what I expected you would, and what dear friend Brian had cited (with a small miscue). But did you notice, in the second paragraph of my "Word about PALE FIRE," the Magician's putative caveat that was the point of my discourse? I quote: 
 
"It is possible, however, that Father might have perused the more brilliant dovody [Russ: "arguments" - DBJ], rubbed his chin between thumb and index, then perhaps pursed his lips as he sometimes did in mock chagrin, and said "Maybe I didn't realize it and they're right."
