The idea that Shade or Kinbote is the inventor of the other is another theory entirely, a theory that Nabokov himself ridiculed.

I wish I knew where I read it - -  the only hint I can offer now is that it was originally not in a formal context - - so either a letter or verbal comment which I would have read as a quote. It has been a few years since I was reading about Pale Fire, it could be in anything from Field to Boyd or after.
