In his memoirs Amfiteatrov mentions Pyotr Nikolaevich Lebedev (1866-1911), the physicist who was the first to measure the pressure of light on a solid body:

The famous writer in "The Event" is a namesake of Lebedev, whose surname comes from лебедь, "swan." "The Swan Rising from the Dead" is Antonina Pavlovna's latest fairy tale she reads to her guests ("The Event," Act Two).
