‘When he gets up to Cambridge, he doesn't know what he wants to study (which is an oddity, as it's usually mandatory to know what one wants to read there)’ says Salvatore.

Needs minor but useful re-wording, as my teachers were wont to carp. It’s the word mandatory that’s misleading. The majority of undergraduates certainly have had in mind their preferred range of subjects prior to entrance, and then pursued them through to graduation. In this respect, Martin’s uncertainty is statistically odd. But, while much has changed since 1209 [!], Cambridge admission has never mandated a degree subject nor required the student to pre-commit to one. After all, the six main Schools each cover a huge diversity of subjects. Knowing, say, that you want to study Language/Literature, leaves open many choices within Arts & Humanities.
