I teach it too, and I don't think early plot notice is a problem.

Maybe there is some comfort in Laughter in the Dark. The audacious
first paragraph begins "Once upon a time" and concludes "his life
ended in disaster."

I'm guessing the annotated Hamlet, if there is such a thing, doesn't
try to hide the fact from the beginning that Denmark can be a drag.

Also I suppose one could ask the students to read it the first time
without the notes. Of course the danger there is pretty apparent :)
