It sounds like the bodkin’s role in the shtetl underworld has metamorphosized with very little change into the standup routines on Fox’s Comedy Central in the U.S.
There is often an element of risk when bright youngsters decide to incorporate ancient traditional practices into their modern-day wedding services. We do not know nearly as much as we think we do about the “real” way these old ethnic celebratory practices were carried out, even though we may be able to find the possibly somewhat purified written record that a village cleric or monastic historian may have left behind.
