As a student of VN in 57/58 I don't recall him wearing a bowtie.  He seemed to favor a dark plaid wool necktie.  Can't think of any idiosyncrasies at the lectern except his hands clasped together just below his chin.  Mrs VN always turned on the reading lamp.

He also said, off the nabocuff (a pun, as good readers will know, that he used on occasion himself), that this vowel sound was but a distant approximation of the impregnable Russian prototype. Incidentally, the bow tie was not a "signature" accessory of his.
