Just for clarification: 1. I posted the response (poem included) that --VN himself-- wrote in the 1970 supplement to TriQuarterly. It was not my own invention, and I posted it merely out of interest, not to contest Dmitri Nabokov's earlier post. I also thought I remembered a list member struggling to remember the quoted poem that VN wrote? 2. I am relieved to hear Dmitri Nabokov's comment that "spoke of" is a better rhyme for "Nabokov" because that's how I've always pronounced it. 3. "Peeney," unfortunately for me, is not exactly natural to the American ear. Easy to pronounce, but elicits much questioning and teasing. Oh, the torment I suffered on the playground as a child!
