Especially as Nabokov would have been the last  to want such passivity and abdication of individual thought in any reader. He certainly never read even favorites like Pushkin, Flaubert, Tolstoy or Joyce without a sense of his right to disagree, to publicly criticize, or to appreciate and imagine in his own way.
