As he speaks to Barboshin, Troshcheykin compares Barbashin to an ape:

(He is dexterous as an ape; "The Event," Act Three)

In "Gogol and the Devil" (Part One, I) Merezhkovsky calls the devil (whose strong point is his ability to seem that what he is not) "God's ape:"

(According to Merezhkovsky, Khlestakov and Chichikov are two modern Russian faces, two incarnations of the eternal and world-wide evil: "the immortal human poshlust"*)

Alfred Afanasievich Barboshin (the absurd private detective whose "Sherlock-Holmesian" conclusions about Meshaev the Second are all wrong) is an impostor. In fact, Barboshin (whose grandiose plans are a parody of Christ's words that we should love our enemies) and his alter ego Barbashin (who, according to Revshin, is heavenly clean-shaven: "выбрит как бог"**) are but two faces of God's ape, the devil.

As I pointed out before, "Alfred" was an unfinished historical play (1835, first published in 1856 by S. Kulish) by Gogol.

Afanasievich was the patronymic of the writer's father V. A. Gogol-Yanovski (1777-1825). In the last years of his life Vasiliy Afanasievich Gogol was the director and actor in the private theatre of his friend and distant relative D. P. Troshchinsky (1749-1829), a Russian statesman, member of the State Council in the 1800s, the minister of justice in 1814-17. Troshchinsky's portrait was painted by Borovikovsky. The main character in "The Event," Troshcheykin is a portrait-painter.

Btw., the names Barbashin and Barboshin bring to mind Bobchinski and Dobchinski, two landowners in Gogol's "Inspector."
