Meshaev twins in VN's play "The Event"

(According to Barbashin whom Meshaev the Second met at the rail way station, the twin brothers Meshaev are impersonated by one and the same actor who plays one brother good and the other bad; "The Event," Act Three)

Cf. Evreinov, "Оригинал о портретистах," Загадка ("The Model on Portraitists," Riddle):

(the playwright and stage director Evreinov who was portraited by many artists says that people may think of his portraits that it was either one actor in different roles or different actors playing one and the same person.)

In his book Evreinov argues that by making a portrait of his model an artist unconsciously makes his self-portrait Trosheykin who secretly made the second portrait of Baumgarten (the wine dealer), violet-faced and bronze-bellied, on the thundercloud background ("The Event," Act One), actually made his self-portrait!

In his Symposium Annotations to VN's play, A. Babikov points out many allusions in "The Event" to Evreinov's play "Самое главное" ("The Main Thing").
