("The Event," Act Three; Barboshin mentions beautiful unfaithful women of the past century wearing dark, as a night, veils)

(Amfiteatrov, "From Literary Reminiscences," XII; two couples meet at the stairs of a restaurant but pretend not to notice or know each other; although women are veiled, the memoirist recognizes the high society lady companion of his friend)

On the other hand, Barboshin mentions Tamara Georgievna Grekov, the blond woman of twenty seven with a lap dog who is involved in the ultraadulter of the B type, series 18 ("The Event," Act Three). In Chekhov's stroy "The Lady with the Dog" (1899) Gurov meets Anna Sergeevna at the theatre, they leave the stalls in the interval and stop to speak on the narrow staircase:

On the narrow, gloomy staircase over which was written "To the Amphitheatre," she stopped. (chapter III)

The name Amfiteatrov comes from amfiteatr ("amphitheatre"), of course.
