Jerry Friedman's birds are beautiful, but the striped woodpecker (Veniliornis lignarius, found in southwestern South America) on every spine of Sapsucker paperbacks must look like this:

Other South American birds mentioned in Ada (2.8) are Marvellous Spatuletails (Loddigesia mirabilis): The recently repapered wall immediately west of the now louder-murmuring (et pour cause) dorocene lamp is ornamented in the central girl's honor with Peruvian 'honeysuckle' being visited (not only for its nectar, I'm afraid, but for the animalcules stuck in it) by marvelous Loddigesia Hummingbirds...

They can be seen at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Loddigesia_mirabilis_%2B_Aechmea_mucroniflora_-_Gould_Troch._pl._161.jpg
