EDITOR'S NOTE: As a footnote to this exchange on VN and whales, I
mentionthat Melvyl (and MOBY DICK) was a paticular favorite of VN who
worked Melvyl allusions into several works. Suellen Stringer-Hye
is writing a paper on VN & Melvyl. DBJ

Nabokov and the Whale Question

Readers of Galya's posting [on the Whale named Lolita] might be
interested to know that a man in Manchester (UK) [who very coincidentally
was my gardener at the time] was recently prosecuted for
sexually abusing a dolphin. He claimed he was trying
to 'liberate' it in a "Free Willy" campaign which has
marked undertones for users of English English.

He was found innocent, but we had to part company - because
he was such a terrible gardener.
