On Dieter Zimmer's queries:

The zoo in Indiana is in Evansville, my mother's home town. But I only
know about it from the 1991 edition of Alfred Appel's Annotated Lo,
which adds a note on this. (It is also identified in his Nabokov's Dark
Cinema, 203.)

Appel also does have a note on the town of Shakespeare, although it's
not helpful on the exact location of the place.

I wonder myself about the reference to ``Fullbright'' at 223. Mona
writes to Lolita: ``Dad wants me to go to school in Paris for one year
while he and Fullbright are around.'' This sounds like a reference to
the Fulbright Scholar Program, or one of the various other programs
under the Fulbright name, the first of which started, I gather, in 1948,
and so in plenty of time for Mona's father to apply. If that's the
case, though, then ``Fullbright'' ought to be corrected to
``Fulbright.''
