Today's Los Angeles Times business section reports that Reebok International
is " ... considering ways to backtrack" after finding out they have shipped
53,000 pairs of shoes known as the "Incubus." A spokesperson said: "We are
a company that has built its business on women's footwear, so to do anything
that's denigrating to women is not what we're about."
No one at Reebok admits to knowing how the "Incubus" name got on the shoe and
was approved, etc.
"'Mother, I swear Kenny never even _touched_ me.' 'You either lie, Dolores
Haze, or it was an incubus.' No, I would not go that far."
The Times provides a handy definition of the word which pretty much matches
Appel's (p. 71 in paperback). As another Ken, Kesey, might have said, you're
either incubus or off the bus.
