The Phi Beta Kappa _Key Reporter_ (v. 64 #2 (Winter 98-99, pp. 6-8)
features an interview with NYTimes correspondent Serge Schmemann.
Schmemann, son of a well-known emigre theologian, served as
correspondent in Russia both before and after the Fall, and has written a
book called _Echoes of My Native Land_.

In the interview reported, he is asked how he became a journalist. He
begins his reply:

"I majored in English literature. I remember I once met Vladimir Nabokov
and he said, 'Just like my son. An excuse to do nothing but read what you
would have read anyway.' He wasn't too far off." (p. 6)
