I accept everything that Mary Bellino says about Caligula being unlike
Kinbote, but in the crystal land of Zembla there appear to be resemblances
between things remote, sometimes very remote; and the hall of looking-glasses
distorts as well as reflects the self-repeating images it shanghais down its
zigzag paths. I had forgotten Kinbote was a tender-hearted animal-lover, but
it reminded me that so was Caligula --- well, he was fond of horses, anyway.
On the other hand I don't remember Charles Xavier expressing a desire to
annexe Britain. But the perennial similarities between rulers of any kind,
even democratically elected ones, lies in the serious risk they run of losing
their grip on the grim realities that anchor the rest of us to grubby earth.
