In the December 5, 1999 issue of the Washington Post Book World, A. S.
Byatt has a short article on some of her favorite writers. Nabokov is
prominently featured. One sentence that is highlighted in red ink in the
middle of the page reads: "Nabokov never wrote a sentence that wasn't
polished and gleaming, but his short _Transparent Things_ qualifies for my
imaginary collection of Faberge eggs. It is about transparency and the
glitter of things...." She also mentions Nabokov's "fleeting appearance"
in W. G. Sebald's "extraordinary _The Emigrants._
