Dear Mr Bertin,

There are many references to mesmerism and the history of hypnotism in Pale Fire. The early believers (actually even into the 20th century) thought that some sort of magnetic &/or electric phenomenon was at work. I am reading Professor (of Philosophy, University of Toronto) Ian Hacking's book Rewriting the Soul: Multiple Personalities and the Sciences of Memory. It is a wonderfully unacademic approach to the history of this psychological oddity, with more than a few literary references, and you will find there much of interest about theories regarding electricity and psychology.

Carolyn Kunin

EDITOR's NOTE: The "L Disaster" in ADA involves the banning of electricity
following some unstated catastrophe. In "The Return of Chorb", electricity
and light bulbs have a place as in the poem "Pale Fire".
Other suggestions?
