Perhaps I missed it here, but three Nabokov characters were on the list
of
"100 best characters in fiction since 1900" selected by a 56-member
panel
for the magazine Book and published in the March/April 2002 issue.
Following each character named is a brief comment. With the character
and
order in the list, I quote the comment. The article is on pp 38-45.
3 Humbert Humbert
Licentious professor in _Lolita_ (1955)
Upon its publication, Nabokov's much-reviled book had only one notable
champion: author Graham Greene, who called it one of the best books of
1955.
14 Lolita
High school nymphet and object of Humbert Humbert's lecherous advances
in
_Lolita_ (1955)
An early sketch of Lolita appeared in Nabokov's 1939 story "The
Enchanter."
In it, an unnamed European adolescent is molested by her stepfather
after
her mother dies.
70 Charles Kinbote
Scholar/mad annotator/lunatic from _Pale Fire_ (1962)
In Pale Fire Kinbote observes that he can "do what only a true artist
can
do...pounce upon the forgotten butterfly of revelation," a statement
that
echoes Nabokov's own fascination with lepidopterology.
