Leonid Livak (University of Toronto) has launched a new periodical
called FROM THE OTHER SHORE: Russian Writers Abroad. Past and Present,
published by Charles Schlacks, the annual journal is in English and
Russian. The editor may be contacted at <leolivak@yahoo.com>.

This first number contains several items of interest to Nabokovians.

Kelly Herold (Grinnel), "Cultural References, Semantic Shifts and
Literary Myth in Nabokov's Autobiographies. pp.23-38. A close
comparison of the Russian and English version of VN's autobiography
shows how VN shifted the cultural referents so as to make the text more
Russian for English readers in order to "mythologize" himself for that
audience.

Yurii Leving and Maxim Shraer (Shrayer) present, annotate, and comment
on a letter from VN's Tenishev school companion Samuil Rosov. A 1936
letter from Rosov in Israel prompted VN to reply in a long, moving
letter recalling detailed of their days and fellow students at Tenishev.
ALthough VN's letter had been preserved, the initial letter from Rosov
had not been discovered until now.

The final VN-related item is Lisa Ryoko Wakimiya's reviw of _Nabokov
adn his Fiction: New Perspectives_, edited by Julin Connolly (Cambridge
UP, 1999.
