I would be very curious to know why Lewis Jones attributes a "killer cruelty" to my father, Vladimir Nabokov. Has Mr. Jones read, for example, Bend Sinister, Invitation to a Beheading, Pnin, the short stories, the poetry? Cruelty occupied the pole position on the grid of things Nabokov detested, and it would have been sufficient to acquaint oneself with any of the above to perceive his deep sense of humanity and pity for the underdog.
