EDNOTE. Aleksey Zverev, whose passing is noted below, was a leading Russian
scholar of American literature. For Nabokovians, he will be best remembered
as the author of the elegant entry "Nabokov and Updike" in the The Garland
Nabokov Companion, edited by V. Alexandrov. His last major work was the
biography simply entitled NABOKOV published in 2001.

I, through a fluke, spent several days as his house guest in Moscow circa
1991 and we met saw now and then afterwards. He was a man of great erudition
who wrote on a very wide range of American and Russian authors. His work
will be consulted for many years to come.
