Dear Don,

The plot thickens slightly. I have transatlantically checked "не кем иным как" with friend Gavril Shapiro at Cornell, who also checked Bulgakov, but at first was still of the opinion that in any case "не" was wrong. Then he checked further, in the official stylebook of the Israel State Radio, Справочникe по литерарной правке для работников печати, and lo and behold, the anormalous usage of "не" is, in this case, correct. On the other hand, a different apparent error (or typo) appears in his translation, as posted on the net, although it is not present in the brief citation in his mail: "не кем иными как", seems incorrect because "кем" and "иным" must agree, therefore the final "и" is superfluous. Am I right? (kindly transmit to Alexey).

All best to you and Alexey,

Dmitri

DEAR DMITRI...GLAD TO HEAR YOUR FRIEND ENJOYED THE NIGHTINGALE SONG. (WONDER IF SHE KNOWS ABOUT THE "-RAZBOYNIK?) BELOW I FORWARD ALEXEI SKLYARENKO'S RESPONSE TO YOUR CRITIQUE. I ADVISED ALL THREE OF THE TRANSLATORS THAT NABOKV-L WOULD OF COURSE, RUN THEIR RESPONSES--IF THEY WISH TO DO SO. DON

Subject: Dmitri Nabokov's mistake

Dear Don,

It turns out that I spell "не кем иным как" correctly in my excerpt (to my own surprise). I found those three examples in Russian literature:

1. "Это господа, судырь ты мой, не кто другой, как капитан Копейкин!" (Гоголь, "Мёртвые души")
2. Ночной приятель его был не кто иной, как он сам, - сам господин Голядкин. (Достоевский, "Двойник")
3. Баритон принадлежал не кому иному, как почётному гостю сегодняшнего вечера Аркадию Аполлоновичу Семплеярову. (Булгаков, "Мастер и Маргарита")

Could you, please, forward this to DN?
By the way, I remember now that I had it wrong (i. e. "nikem inym kak") all the time myself, and the right spelling "ne kem inym kak" was the last minute correction.

Once again, thanks for your project and, of course, I thank Dmitri Nabokov for responding to it!

respectfully,
Alexey
