TOP CHOICES FROM TABLEAU\'S SUGGESTED SUMMER READING LIST

Zak M. Salih

It's that time of year again.

If late December and early January are the months for
year-summarizing Top Ten Lists, then summer previews undoubtedly
dominate late April and early May. Over the next four months,
gluttons of popular culture will drool over the expansive buffet of
entertainment options offered up to them: movies, CDs, concerts,
plays, amusements, vacation spots – the list runs on and on.

The summer of 2005 promises to be an exceptional season for casual
and serious readers. After all, what is a lazy day at the beach or an
afternoon at the local park without a good read? Below is a brief
preview of some of the season's most promising publications.

Some are meant to be read in quiet, air-conditioned spaces; some can
be bruised, battered and buried at the beach. A few of these books
fall into the category of serious literature; others are light reads
that could be conquered in an afternoon by the community pool. All of
them should make it a great summer for books.

The Stanley Kubrick Archives, edited by Alison Castle (April)-- This
grand (and somewhat expensive) art book is a multifaceted tribute to
the late director of such landmark films as 2001: A Space Odyssey and
Dr. Strangelove. The first section is a silent narrative of the
director's 13 films told through stills; the second is a collection
of notes, interviews and essays illuminating Kubrick's canon.

Lolita, read by Jeremy Irons (April 26) -- Even though Vladimir
Nabokov's brilliant novel makes for good reading at any time of the
year, listening to actor Jeremy Irons as the narrative voice of
Humbert Humbert promises to be a worthwhile audio book experience.
