Dear Editors and List...
Once when I was covering a bucolic festival in the Western Transvaal at
which an entire male giraffe (doomed because he had begun to display
signs of senile aggression) was slaughtered, injected with gallons of
granny's secret recipe marinade, then cooked for 48 hours on a motorised
spit and served up in aid of local charities to hundreds of jolly boers
who sat on straw bales consuming pink portions that dwarfed the biggest
item on the menu at the Carnegie Deli, I met a charming journalist from
Joburg whose first name was Pnina. She told me that it meant Pearl.
