Walter Miale criticized Freud's Oedipal theory because he agreed with J. Masson's assumptions that Freud had altered his original theory of "seduction" to protect his own father and this is why his theory functioned 'as a form of "denial", and consequently as a sanction, of socially accepted (at the time) pedophilia'.
I see Miale's point but, although I cannot question Masson's documented facts, I still doubt the validity of the conclusions he drew from them. As I understand it Freud's radical shift only broadened the scope of his clinical view and subsequent discoveries, independently of its causes.

Jeffrey Masson made what is probably the best documented and most
convincing case for this. He refers to Freud's own account of the
genesis of the idea. (Of course Masson acquired a bad name in
Freudian circles.)
This is perhaps Freud at his worst. It may provide a clue to
understanding the degree of VN's scorn.

and/or Freud's correspondence on which as I recall Masson built his
case. Masson as I recall was a Freudian when he began his research.
Personally, I found his case convincing.
