William Weld, the flamboyant, fun, and rather fickle former Republican
governor of Massachusetts -- he quit in the middle of his second term,
in 1997, because he got bored -- is in the news again after abruptly
withdrawing from New York's gubernatorial race. According to a "Life of
the Party," a feature by Don Aucoin in today's Boston Globe (p. E3):

"'I'm a little like Ishmael in 'Moby-Dick,'" Weld jauntily explained to
reporters. "There's a little November in my soul."

Weld's favorite author, though, was not Herman Melville but Ford Madox
Ford. When he read for pleasure, Weld was likely to reach for Ford's
tetralogy "Parade's End." He also claimed to have read "every word" of
Vladimir Nabokov, and singled out "Pale Fire" as the Nabokov novel he
liked best. Explained Weld: "I like 'dry' literature."
