Was he more than a witchdoctor, as Vladimir Nabokov called him, and did
his system amount to more than a harmless mythology, as Jean-Paul Sartre
saw it? There are difficulties whichever way you to try to move towards
an answer.

Witchdoctors, after all, can effect things undreamed of by philosophy
and it may be that a systematic mythology that does no harm has high
claims.
