The friend of the steppe Kalmuck didn't yet start to tear out Nabokov's
books from the hands of the Tungus - or at least from those of a foreign
reporter. But it is only a problem of time. Most chess players admire
"The
Luzhin Defense" and such grand masters as Kasparov and Kramnik count it
among their favorite books. As to Ilyumzhinov, it is an Ostap
Bender-like
figure, minus the latter's charm. Incidentally, Kalmykia is situated to
the
West of the Caspian Sea.
