Vladimir Nabokov = bal + dva + i + okno v mir = invalid + bravo + kom

okno + dom = odno + kom = oko + Mond

bal - ball, dance; Bal ("The Ball," 1828) is a poem by Baratynski that
appeared under one cover with Pushkin's Count Nulin (1825)

dva - 2

i - and; English first person pronoun

okno v mir - window to the world

kom - lump; ball; clod; cf. pervyi blin komom ("practice makes perfect")

dom - house; home

odno - one thing (neut. of odin, one)

oko - obs., eye

Mond - Germ., moon

In the last line of an anonymous epigram on Pushkin and Baratynskki that was
published by Prince Shalikov, the editor of Damskiy zhurnal ("Ladies'
Magazine" in which "The Ball" and "Count Null" had appeared), nuli (naughts)
and edinitsy (units) are mentioned:

Точили балы в них и всё нули писали;

:Ah, the persons familiar to us often talk rubbish!

And often to their naughts we add units.

According to Kinbote, in its finished form Shade's poem should consist of
1000 lines:

Nay, I shall even assert (as our shadows still walk without us) that there
remained to be written only one line of the poem (
<http://www.shannonrchamberlain.com/palefirepoem.html#line1000> namely verse
1000) which would have been identical to
<http://www.shannonrchamberlain.com/palefirepoem.html#line1> line 1 and
would have completed the symmetry of the structure, with its two identical
central parts, solid and ample, forming together with the shorter flanks
twin wings of five hundred verses each, and damn that music. Knowing Shade's
combinatorial turn of mind and subtle sense of harmonic balance, I cannot
imagine that he intended to deform the faces of his crystal by meddling with
its predictable growth. And if all this were not enough--and it is, it is
enough--I have had the dramatic occasion of hearing my poor friend's own
voice proclaim on the evening of July 21 the end, or almost the end, of his
labors. (See my note to line 991.)
<http://www.shannonrchamberlain.com/commentary.html#comline991> (Foreword)

But it seems to me that Line 1001 ("By its own double in the windowpane,"
the poem's coda) should be added to Shade's poem. Nuli i edinitsy (naughts
and units) are also mentioned by Pushkin in Eugene Onegin (Two: XIV: 3-4):

We deem all people naughts

And ourselves units.

In the same stanza (5-7) of EO Pushkin says that "we all expect to be
Napoleons; the millions of two-legged creatures for us are orudie odno (only
tools)." Odno = Odon = Nodo (in PF Nodo is Odon's epileptic half-brother).
In the last paragraph of his Commentary Kinbote mentions the actor Odon and
a million photographers:

Oh, I may do many things! History permitting, I may sail back to my
recovered kingdom, and with a great sob greet the gray coastline and the
gleam of a roof in the rain. I may huddle and groan in a madhouse. But
whatever happens, wherever the scene is laid, somebody, somewhere, will
quietly set out - somebody has already set out, somebody still rather far
away is buying a ticket, is boarding a bus, a ship, a plane, has landed, is
walking toward a million photographers, and presently he will ring at my
door - a bigger, more respectable, more competent Gradus. (note to Line
1000; see also my post of Oct. 31, 2015)

Napoleon was Marina Tsvetaev's idol. In her essay Poety s istoriey i poety
bez istorii ("Poets with History and Poets without History," 1933) Marina
Tsvetaev several times uses the word odno:

They [poets without history] have come into the world not to learn, but to
say. To say what they already know, everything what they know (if it is a
lot), the only thing they know (if it is but one thing). (I)

In her essay Marina Tsvetaev speaks of Goethe's Faust and mentions a poem of
thousand lines:

)

In the same paragraph Marina Tsvetaev mentions Pushkin's Mozart and Salieri.
In Pushkin's little tragedy Mozart uses the phrase nikto b (none would),
Botkin backwards. V. Botkin seems to be Shade's, Kinbote's and Gradus'
"real" name.

According to Tsvetaev, for poets with history there are no extraneous
themes, they are conscious participants of the world. Their "I" is equal to
the world:

In the closing lines of Marina Tsvetaev's poem Vot opyat' okno ("Here is a
window again:" 1916) dom rhymes with ognyom (Instr. of ogon', fire).

Okno is the last word in G. Ivanov's poem Ne spitsya mne. Zazhech' svechu?
("I can't fall asleep. To light a candle?" 1923) in which the moon is
mentioned:

In the last stanza's first line G. Ivanov twice repeats the phrase sto let
(hundred years). Pushkin uses the phrase proshlo sto let (hundred years have
passed) in Poltava (1828) and in Mednyi vsadnik ("The Bronze Horseman,"
1833). Unlike Goethe, Pushkin and VN, Marina Tsvetaev and Georgiy Ivanov are
"poets without history." It does not mean that they are "naughts."
