Here is a postscript to my previous post on VN's play "The Waltz Invention:"
Slava ("Fame," 1942) is a poem by VN. In Pushkin's Razgovor knigoprodavtsa s
poetom (Conversation of Bookseller with Poet, 1824) Bookseller says that
fame is merely a bright patch upon the songster's threadbare rags. In
Pushkin's poem zaplata (patch) rhymes with zlata (Gen. of zlato):
Что слава?- Яркая заплата
На ветхом рубище певца.
Нам нужно злата, злата, злата:
Копите злато до конца!
"What we need is gold, gold, gold;
accumulate gold to the last!"
An obsolete form of zoloto (gold), zlato is also used by Pushkin in Zoloto i
bulat ("Gold and Sword," 1826):
"Всё моё", - сказало злато;
"Всё моё", - сказал булат.
"Всё куплю", - сказало злато;
"Всё возьму", - сказал булат.
"All is mine," said the gold.
"All is mine," said the sword.
"I'll buy all," said the gold.
"I'll take all," said the sword.
In "The Waltz Invention" General Berg makes an ingenious pun on the poem's
Line 3:
Сон. Следует немедленно купить у Сальватора Вальса его замечательную штуку.
Министр. Ну вот. Это правильно. Новичок, а сразу сказал, между тем как
другие, старые, сидят балдами. Да, господа, надо купить! Все согласны?
Голоса. Купить, купить!.. Отчего же, можно... Конечно, купить...
Берг. Все куплю, сказал мулат. Грах, грах, грах. (Act Two)
"I'll buy all," said the mulatto.
Mulat (the mulatto) mentioned by general Berg brings to mind Ostap Bender's
words to Koreyko in Ilf and Petrov's novel Zolotoy telyonok ("The Golden
Calf," 1931), "my mulattoes [Balaganov and Panikovski] are waiting for me:"
- Возможно, - заметил Остап. - Я не ангел. У меня есть недочёты. Однако я с
вами заболтался. Меня ждут мулаты. Прикажете получить деньги?
- Да, деньги! - сказал Корейко. - С деньгами заминка. Папка хорошая, слов
нет, купить можно, но, подсчитывая мои доходы, вы совершенно упустили из
виду расходы и прямые убытки. Миллион - это несуразная цифра. (Chapter XXII:
"I will Command the Parade")
A secret Soviet millionaire, Koreyko reminds one of tsar Kashchey pining
away over his gold (nad zlatom chakhnet) in Pushkin's great introductory
poem to Ruslan and Lyudmila:
Там царь Кащей над златом чахнет,
Там русский дух, там Русью пахнет.
мулат + балда + Эссер + писатель + вальс + злато + Вальс = булат +
Эсмеральда + спаситель + слава + зло + власть
мулат - mulatto
балда - blockhead (the word used by the Minister of War who calls the
generals "blockheads"); Pushkin is the author of Skazka o pope i rabotnike
ego Balde ("Fairytale about the Priest and his Workman Balda," 1830)
Эссер - Professor Esser whom Eleonora Shnap (Lyubov's former mid-wife)
mentions at Antonina Pavlovna's birthday party ("The Event," Act Two)
писатель - writer
вальс - waltz
злато - gold
Вальс - Salvator Waltz
булат - steel; sword
Эсмеральда - Esmeralda
спаситель - rescuer, saver; the Savior
слава - fame; glory
зло - evil
власть - power; authority
In chess problems there can be two white (or black) Queens on the board,
therefore I do not see why in the anagram's first part вальс (waltz) can't
be repeated twice.
