FROM: Don Johnson

In his Foreword to the English translation of the _THE DEFENSE_ VN refers to
to a famous chess game--the so-"Immortal Game" played in 1851 by Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kieseritsky. I (and many people more chess- savvy than I) have argued that the allusion has implications for understanding the novel.

Today the L.A; Times reviewed a book by David Shenk: THE IMMORTAL GAME (Doubleday) devoted in large part to that game. Shenk's book may be worth looking at. If anyone does, please advise NABOKV-L.
