Two years ago, I came across 18 black and white negatives of Vladimir Nabokov, including one with Vera, that I took in Arizona in the spring of 1959. They were on their last butterfly hunt out West before heading to Hollywood and Lolita, and I accompanied them to gather notes for an article in Sports Illustrated. (Volume 2 of Brian Boyd's biography has an account of my time with V&V.).
None of the negatives has ever been published anywhere as a photograph, and given that I have no need for them, an international auction house has asked that I consign them for sale along with the right to reproduce and publish them as photographs. However, to offset the chance that they could slip into unknown hands, I would like to offer knowing Nabokovians first dibs.
. I am NOT a professional photographer. In fact I took the candid shots with a Kodak Brownie Box .camera. Most pictures are hazy but two are of special interest. One that I call "Butterfly Bliss" shows Vladimir, basking in the sun, flat cap off, gazing up with a smile, butterfly net in his right hand. The one with Vera is not as clear, but is possibly unique as it is the only photograph so far as I know that shows V&V together with butterfly nets. Seventeen shots were taken on Mount Mingus near the ghost town of Jerome, the remaining shot taken in Sedona ("the Flying Saucer Capital of the World") of Vladimir getting into the passenger seat of their car with a bag of groceries, after asking if I would join him in having butteries for breakfast the next morning.
