ŒWhen he gets up to Cambridge, he doesn't know what he wants to study (which
is an oddity, as it's usually mandatory to know what one wants to read
there)¹ says Salvatore.

Needs minor but useful re-wording, as my teachers were wont to carp. It¹s
the word mandatory that¹s misleading. The majority of undergraduates
certainly have had in mind their preferred range of subjects prior to
entrance, and then pursued them through to graduation. In this respect,
Martin¹s uncertainty is statistically odd. But, while much has changed since
1209 [!], Cambridge admission has never mandated a degree subject nor
required the student to pre-commit to one. After all, the six main Schools
each cover a huge diversity of subjects. Knowing, say, that you want to
study Language/Literature, leaves open many choices within Arts &
Humanities.
